Rebellion Era Campaign

This is it folks. We’re gearing up again for a campaign and I can’t wait.

Now because I don’t know what kind of characters you want to make just yet, I can’t speak to what this campaign will be like – I want to cater to what it is you want. That being said this era of Star Wars has certain themes which will no doubt ooze through the whole campaign regardless of what story we tell. Use these themes as ideas in your character creation.

1. Good vs. Evil

It’s so iconic but people underestimate how powerful it is as a story telling device. Star Wars was released in an era where movies had anti-heroes, bleak outcomes and disaster stories. The simplicity of Star Wars gets people at a primordial level – we want to be good and sometimes you have to take the fight to evil.

2. The Underdog story

Who doesn’t like supporting the underdog? The Rebellion is constantly out-gunned, out-manned and even when they are out-played, they are rarely defeated and if they are, they go down swinging. Fighting the good fight against insurmountable odds is so much fun to be apart of, especially against the Empire. The Rebellion can only succeed because it has access to incredibly capable, loyal and at times insane individuals.

3. Selfish vs. Selfless

Think Han vs. Luke in Episode IV. “Look, I ain’t in this for your revolution, and I’m not in it for you, princess. I expect to be well paid. I’m in it for the money.” This theme is a great opportunity for character interaction and you can think to yourself where does your character sit on this scale?

4. Familial Conflict

Another great storytelling trope and the main plot of Star Wars (all 6 movies) revolves around this theme. Who and why you are conflicting with family can be an excellent character back story, should you choose.

5. Fear vs. Honour

Think Lando in Episode V. “I had no choice. They arrived right before you did. I’m sorry.” The Empire is a terrifying entity and has severe repercussions for those who don’t fall in line, Rebellion or not. How individuals react in this circumstance is also another theme you might want to think about for your character.
